Research and diagnostics Lab Sanquin

Amsterdam – Like many companies, Sanquin is also struggling with the question of how to use existing buildings more effectively.

Like many companies, Sanquin has also been struggling with the question of how to use existing buildings more effectively. Therefor the motto for this design request is: more activities on fewer square meters without sacrificing the quality of the working environment. In addition, this project served as a pilot to put an end to the many renovation costs that usually take place during the life cycle of the laboratories. A consequence of the continuous developments in the field of research and diagnostics.

Together with the involved parties a research conducted for reaching an approach that could facilitate the constant changes in the teams and research methods.

The key was to identify the similarities between all forms of laboratories. The result is a generic module that can be made specific as required without renovation. This way each module has its own access and the necessary facilities to function both as a standalone and linked with other modules. As a result of growth or shrinkage, the departments can therefore easily use more or fewer modules.

The focus on more effective use of the space in combination with the aesthetic characteristics that were already present in the original building and the introduction of an abundance of daylight have led to a special and pleasant working environment.
